Haematology

Haematology

A male nurse stands beside an older man in a chair who is receiving chemotherapy treatmentOur Haematology unit provides patient-centred care to patients with most types of blood cancer (Healthy WA). It is part of the broader Integrated Cancer Service.

Based at Rockingham General Hospital, the unit provides comprehensive and multidisciplinary cancer care to guide patients through:

  • diagnosis
  • management
  • treatment
  • survivorship (after cancer treatment has completed).

Haematology treatments are administered in our Chemotherapy Day Unit and include:

  • chemotherapy (external site)
  • immunotherapy (external site)
  • a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy
  • targeted treatments (external site)
  • pain and symptom control.

The Haematology unit:

  • treats patients with non-malignancy bone marrow conditions, including bone marrow failure syndromes and immune related blood disorders
  • provides clinical services to treat other blood conditions, including blood clots, bleeding and iron disorders.
  • treats patients with most types of blood cancers, with the exception of:
    • aggressive lymphoma requiring multi-day hospital stay
    • acute myeloid leukaemia and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia on intensive chemotherapy
    • blood cancers in children and young adolescents.

To improve patient outcomes for selected patient groups, the Haematology unit has access to clinical studies via the Integrated Cancer Service’s clinical trial unit.

Please go to your nearest emergency department (ED). If you are having chemotherapy or immunotherapy, present your purple card to the ED staff.
