Medical imaging

Medical imaging

The Medical Imaging department at Rockingham General Hospital provides a range of diagnostic and interventional services to patients referred from the hospital’s emergency department, wards and outpatient clinics.

Referrals for some procedures are accepted from general practitioners and private medical consultants – see below for more information.

Our services include:

  • general x-rays (Healthy WA), including OPG dental X-rays (x-ray of the upper and lower jaw, including teeth)
  • computed tomography (CT) scanning (Healthy WA)
  • ultrasound (Healthy WA)
  • fluoroscopy (barium studies) (using x-rays to produce real time images during diagnostic or interventional procedures)
  • minor interventional procedures, including image guided joint injections.

We do not offer:

  • MRI
  • bone densitometry
  • nuclear medicine studies.

Our department is accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) (external site) and the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) (external site).

Appointments

Appointments are required for all special procedures at Rockingham General Hospital including ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopy.

No appointment is required for general x-rays.

Services at Murray District Hospital

Medical imaging services are available for patients at Murray District Hospital and for patients who require a general x-ray at the request of their general practitioner (GP).

Our hours of operation at MDH are 9am – 3pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Medical imaging reports

Following your imaging examination or procedure a formal report is provided to your referring practitioner within a few days.

Higher priority results can be made available more promptly, and in urgent cases the radiologist will liaise directly with your referring practitioner.

All patients require a referral to access medical imaging services.

Referrals are accepted from:

  • medical practitioners (public and private)
  • podiatrists
  • physiotherapists
  • chiropractors
  • dentists
  • hospital-based nurse practitioners.
