Although out of the public eye, helping to keep their hospital kitchens working seamlessly are Rockingham Peel Group (RkPG) cooks Leanne Davidson and Jessica Lloyd.

Pinjarra resident Leanne (pictured top) has worked at Murray District Hospital (MDH) since 1978, starting in a holiday relief role for cleaning and kitchen staff. Leanne was then asked to cover cook shifts, which she did for a number of years before completing her Tradesperson cook certificate in 1996, and she hasn’t looked back since.

Leanne said she loves cooking fresh food and working closely together with management to achieve the best results for patients.

“I love my job, I love cooking and I love keeping our patients happy,” Leanne said.

A microwave is on a bench behind her and a series of kitchen knives hangson a wall.Jessica Lloyd (pictured bottom) joined Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) as a casual food service attendant without any formal training in 2014. By 2017 she had worked her way up to senior food service leading hand cook.

As a cook in a busy hospital kitchen, Jessica is involved in preparing meals, covering shifts, ordering food and supplies and supervising staff.

Jessica is extremely grateful for the opportunities that she has been given within her role to expand her knowledge and responsibilities, including project work from managers and dieticians.

“Every day is different, and I really enjoy the project work and the other responsibilities that are asked of me from my managers,” Jessica said.

Recruitment is currently underway for food service attendants to join teams at both RGH and MDH. These roles would suit people who like to work in a fast-moving environment, are able to work with a range of different personalities and are willing to learn. No formal training is required as on the job training is provided.

Applications to join the RkPG food service attendant recruitment pool are now being accepted – visit the WA Health Jobs Board (external link) for more information.
