Nurse and mother-of-one Nicola Crichton has a lot on her plate right now, and she couldn’t be happier.

Not only is she busy working at Rockingham General Hospital (RGH), and completing her post-graduate midwifery degree, she is also due to have her second baby at the hospital next month.

“I have been a nurse for the past five years and I made the decision to become a midwife after spending time in the nursery on the maternity ward here,” Nicola said.

“I’m really passionate about midwifery and by furthering my studies it gives me a broader range of skills, and it was a case of now or never really”

Nicola fell pregnant with her second child while still studying, and will deliver her baby at Rockingham next month.

“Mother’s Day marks six weeks until we meet our newest family member and we’re really looking forward to welcoming a sibling for my two year old daughter,” Nicola said.

RGH Maternity Unit Manager Alicia Pearce said Nicola’s studies along with her own personal experiences as a new mum made her the perfect midwife.

“It’s always nice when staff have the opportunity to be on the other side of the profession and become a patient, and even more special when we get to welcome a new baby in to our work family as well,” Alicia said.

This year marks International Year of the Nurse and Midwife and honours the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.
