Milestone celebrations for Mimidi Park

The mental health inpatient unit at Rockingham General Hospital, Mimidi Park, has marked 10 years since its doors first opened to patients.

One of the most acute and complex mental health inpatient units in Australia, Mimidi Park has cared for more than 5,200 inpatients over the decade, equating to roughly 96,346 nights of stay.

RKPG Mental Health Service Medical Co-Director, Anthony Collier, commended past and present staff for always striving to provide safe and quality care.

“They are not only hard working but also committed to providing expert holistic care to their patients,” Anthony said.

Echoing Mimidi Park’s commitment to quality, consumer-focused care is the introduction of Peer Support Carers on the ward arranged through a partnership with non-government organisation, Helping Minds.

The building was officially opened on 24 November 2010 following extensive consumer and carer consultation.

“Following a broad consultative process, the unit was named ‘Mimidi’ referring to the base section of native plants that regenerates after damage and provides nourishment to the plant,” Rockingham Peel Group (RKPG) Mental Health Service Medical Co-Director, Dr Gordon Shymko, said.

The unit’s design optimises the use of space, light and glass and includes the unique development of quiet rooms, family rooms and a gym for the 20 adult and 10 older adult patients.
